What is Botox?

Botox is an injection that contains a neurotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. When injected in small amounts in specific areas of the body, the neurotoxin diminishes muscle movement or blocks nerve signals to get the desired result.

With facial wrinkles, for example, Botox stops the muscle movement that creates the etched-in lines. When you smile, laugh, frown, or look puzzled, the muscles under your skin contract and create grooves that fold the skin.

Over time, your repeated facial expressions and skin folding cause permanent lines and creases. Botox temporarily stops this facial muscle activity, giving your skin an opportunity to relax and smooth out. 

What are the brands of Botox?

Botox Cosmetic

Botox Cosmetic is a cosmetic injection that contains onabotulinumtoxinA, a purified protein. Frederick Med Spa uses Botox Cosmetic to treat deep wrinkles.

Xeomin

Xeomin contains incobotulinumtoxinA, which is a slightly different form of the active ingredient in Botox Cosmetic. Frederick Med Spa uses Xeomin to treat wrinkles and health concerns.

Dysport

AbobotulinumtoxinA is the active ingredient in Dysport. It temporarily smooths out severe to moderate wrinkles without changing your natural look. Dysport is ideal for those in need of treatments for multiple areas of the face.

Despite the variations in the active ingredient, each brand of Botox works the same way.

Frederick Med Spa also has Juvéderm®, which is a dermal filler that adds volume under the skin to smooth out lines and enhance natural features. 

What does Botox treat?

When will I see results from Botox?

Results from your Botox injections vary and depend on the brand used and your specific treatment. In general, you may see improvements in your look within a week and continued improvements over the next month.

Botox injections are temporary, lasting 3-4 months*. Frederick Med Spa recommends follow-up Botox treatments to maintain your look. For wrinkles, regular Botox injections may prevent new lines and wrinkles from forming.
